Wishing I Was Still on Vacation...

Tue, 08/26/2008 - 11:25AM by sabs 1 Comment - 12 Views

As promised, here are some pics from Costa Rica! There's plenty more to come, I'm trying to break it apart in to a few days at a time. Here's day one and two.

This set starts off with us getting on the Bart to go to the airport, traveling for 24 hours, eating our first meal in a swim-up bar (so much for waiting 30 minutes before heading into the water!), hanging around on suspension bridges, ziplining through the jungle, and monkeys.

Nerd Friday

Fri, 08/22/2008 - 1:20PM by sabs 1 Comment - 21 Views

We have this thing at our house, it's called Nerd Friday. We made it up, although I'm sure we're not the only people in the world to have put the two words together. And it's exactly like it sounds. It's nerdy, and it's on Friday. And it happens just about every Friday.

So what is it exactly?

Well first, let me give you a tiny bit of back story. I am, and always have been, a loud chatty person. I like interacting with other folks, and doing "stuff" and having fun. Meaning, I enjoy going out to bars and restaurants and parties and other people's houses. Pretty much anywhere other people are bound to be.

Randall however is the exact opposite. He likes things quiet, and calm and with as few people as possible. He is perfectly happy to stay at home with a cup of coffee and his trusty PS3/Wii/Universal controller. He's also been known to read and nap. Like I said it's the exact opposite of my ideal situation.

And yet somehow I have warmed up to his nerdy ways. After eight years of fighting it, I actually look forward to coming home on Friday night and doing nothing (granted, I usually try to make sure Saturday has a lot of something going on to make up for it). We sit around and watch dopey television (his shows that I used to make fun of, but now secretly really like -- some more than others), play cards, read, and nap. He'll also surf the internet (being sure to maintain his daily 13 hours online status quo) and I'll do something old-fashioned like knit (although don't get me started on this 1x1 ribbed tiny ass needles scarf from hell) or bake cookies.

So don't call me on Fridays. It's going straight to voicemail. That is, unless something awesome comes up. After all, a girl can't be nerdy all the time.

What would your ideal Nerd Friday consist of?

Back To the Grind

Finally landed last night, and worked my way into the office today. Didn't get a chance to post photos yet, but will do so tonight. Also, can anyone tell me why it was cheaper to fly from San Francisco to Miami then Costa Rica instead of flying to Dallas then to Costa Rica? How is it that flying many more miles costs less? I only ask because tropical storm Fey caused some havoc on the Miami end of things, and I couldn't help but wonder why on earth we had to fly there to begin with.

Our Skin is No Longer Pasty White...

Sat, 08/16/2008 - 11:25AM by sabs 0 Comments - 14 Views

But sadly it's sort of a lobster red in certain areas.

I don't know how it happened, I thought I did the math right, but apparently my skin (which was shamefully pasty considering I'm half Chinese and spent my teenage years in a nice tanned hue) didn't get the memo. I thought the formula was:

Pasty White Skin + 80 Spf (yes, 80!) sunscreen + sunbathing for less than 2 hours = less pasty, hopefully almost tan

Sadly, the formula is actually:

Pasty White Skin + 80 Spf (yes, 80!) sunscreen + sunbathing for less than 2 hours = lobster red in areas.

Don't even ask about Randall, he apparently thought sunscreen = shade from tree, and we all know that math is wrong.

However, I can't complain, we've spent the last few days here in Manuel Antonio at the new sustainable eco resort called Arenas Del Mar (it's our honeymoon, we're splurging). The staff is amazingly friendly, the beach is three minutes away, and we've just come back from a hike through the park (Pablo, our guide was one of the coolest guys!). They greeted us back in the thatched hut reception/bar area with fresh papaya juice, fresh salsa, fried plantains and tortilla chips, and fruit. Really I can't complain.

What I can do though, is try and figure out how on earth I'll cope with leaving. Any suggestions?

Adios Arenal!

Just checking out of the hotel and thought I´d let everyone know that we managed to survive sliding down 4 waterfalls and a canyon wall. We've also survived several hikes through the jungle -- although in all honesty I think Randall is trying to figure out how I suckered him on the last one. I think it was the promise of seeing wild creatures. We failed, no monkeys this time (although we did see one the first day!) however there was some weird sort of frog, so I guess that´s something.

Wish I had pics to share, but it's not wanting to work, so you'll have to wait until later. Ciao Arenal, and see you soon beach! (That´s where we´re headed next).

Preparing to Rappel Down Four Waterfalls

Tue, 08/12/2008 - 10:40AM by sabs 0 Comments - 12 Views

Sitting in front of the free hotel computer, waiting for a tour bus to pick us up. We´re headed to some part of the rainforest where we will rappel down four waterfalls and a cliff.

Considering we ziplined through the jungle yesterday, I shouldn´t be too concerned right? Yet somehow I´m pretty excit'vous (or would that be nerxcited?). Oh and how is it that my vacations have become excerpts from The Amazing Race? Do you think the Australian host dude will be waiting at my house to grant me a million dollars? I hope so.

Adios!

Hola from The Lost Iguana

Sun, 08/10/2008 - 4:22PM by sabs 1 Comment - 14 Views

Been travelling for 24 hours now. We took a taxi to the bart train to the airplane to the shuttle to the car and drove for forever. However it was all worth it. Randall is checking in to our room at The Lost Iguana now, and I´ve been handed a fruity beverage and an amazing rain forest view. I´ll have a full gallery later.

Adios for now!

Currently Listening: A Little Bit

Over the last few months, I've heard this song by Lykke Li go from random play to often play on Sirius's Left of Center. Each time I heard it I made a mental note to look into it later, but never remember to do it. Thankfully Angelica mentioned it today, so now I can share it with you. It's a pretty fun song, if not somewhat hypnotic.

But you can decide for yourself:

Clucking Hens -- aka I Ended Up Having a Party

Mon, 08/04/2008 - 6:11PM by sabs 9 Comments - 42 Views

In addition to the museum outing, Friday was also the night of my hen night. My pal Cindy (along with my sister Samshrew) set it up, and I'm seriously glad they called it a hen night. Granted, in some cultures a bachelorette party is generally called a hen night, but to me the phrase bachelorette party sounds like a gross outing. Calling it a hen night makes it seem better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude, but I just think Girls Gone Wild sort of outings involving pin the sperm on the penis and other awful "risque" gags are just really tacky. No offense to those of you have actually played pin the sperm. I mean, I've been to a few of these, and they always end up being a blast. And everyone gets drunk and happy, and all is well. It's just not me.

Luckily my gals know this. They know it's not me, and provided me with a fun evening of pedicures (thanks Annie!), tasty food (who knew corn with cheese could be so delicious?), drinking (like i said they know me), a silly veil (thanks to crafty Angelica) and karaoke, lots and lots of karaoke. Like an entire private room of karaoke. Complete with some random guy who almost stripped for us. Thankfully, he did not. Although it would have been a pretty good story if he had.

Now for a highlight from the evening. Actually, brace yourself, there's some serious out-of-tunage drunken screaming about to happen.
