Chihuly is Our Surprise

Sat, 08/02/2008 - 11:26AM by sabs 1 Comment - 212 Views

Yesterday, Allison grabbed the rest of our OnSugar brood and took us to the de Young museum. It was a surprise treat -- although I should mention not everyone loves a surprise (yes Phil, I'm talking to you) -- to see the current Chihuly exhibit.

I'm not totally sure how Chihuly and OnSugar go together, but it was nice to get out of the office.

As far as the exhibit goes, I was impressed and underwhelmed at the same time. While it was impressive to see all the pieces in one place, part of what I like about Chihuly is seeing his pieces as installations. When they're displayed somewhere unexpected, they just seem so much more interesting. Seeing them in a museum strangely turned them to "just glass" in my mind.

However, if you're into it, it's definitely worth checking out. Besides, the de Young is a beautiful building, and who doesn't love Golden Gate Park (yes Randall, I'm talking to you).

If you can't make it, then be sure to check out all the photos in my gallery below.

Overheard...

I'm not taking a taxi. I don't how much they cost or where they go. I don't want to holler, this is my vacation it's supposed to be nice. I'm not staying at a doorman hotel, if I was, taking a cab would be something I do on a regular basis.

Woman on F-Train, apparently not aware that taxis go wherever you want them to go

What Magazines Do You Subscribe To?

Fri, 08/01/2008 - 6:17AM by sabs 7 Comments - 57 Views

This is an old and generic (not to mention sort of lame) interview question. I don't think I've ever been asked it, but I may have actually, in an act of desperation because I'd run out of other questions, asked it of other people.

The theory behind it is that you can tell a lot about what people are in to by what magazines they choose to read. Cat Fancy? Then they're probably a crazy cat person. Guns & Ammo? Well I think you know what they're like.

I think a more updated version of this question, which I know I have asked (I was hiring a blogger, it had to be asked), would be "What's in your RSS reader?" However since my RSS reader is a huge mess, with loads of unread stories and sites I no longer even want to subscribe to, I have decided to subject you all to my physical subscription list.

It should be noted that these are not all mine -- for example Game Developer is definitely Randall's -- however I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy them all.

Read all about them after the jump.

Nightly Routine

cute!

I have a funny little confession to make. Every night before bed I like to look at cute things. It's calming and besides, who doesn't want to go to bed dreaming of pandas and puppies?

Here's a quick spread of things I like to look at before bedtime.

In Which We Put Our Electronics Underwater...

Randall ordered a new toy off of the interwebs and we immediately shoved it into the sink. Don't worry, we were supposed to do that.

Wedding Dress Update: Thank God for Woolite

Wed, 07/30/2008 - 10:40PM by sabs 0 Comments - 11 Views

Another round of woolite and soft bristle toothbrushes has taken the stain out. I'm sure there's still a trace, but I can't find it in the daylight. If you do see it, please just keep it to yourself. Thanks.

How Am I So Clumsy?

Tue, 07/29/2008 - 11:44AM by sabs 0 Comments - 10 Views

As I mentioned before, I am getting married soon. I am trying really hard not to be one of those gals who end up talking about their wedding all the time. So far so good, although I must admit I have had several moments where it happens despite my best efforts.

Anyways, yesterday I went to my final dress-fitting/time to pick the dress up. I have never been a wedding kind of a gal, and never had a dream dress. Having said that, this dress is a dream. It's vintage, and has been altered to fit me perfectly. It's gone from being a gigantic choir robe, to a beautiful dress just for me.

After my fitting I took it home, and now it's a beautiful dress just for me, with a beautiful non-matching water-stain from where I had to clean a portion from where I got car tire grease on it from taking it out of the vehicle and into the house. I had to travel 10 feet. WTF?

No one's going to notice, it's minor. But I know and that's frustrating enough. And well, now you know, so I'm sure you'll point it out to me.

This Year's Big Deal

Sat, 07/26/2008 - 3:43PM by sabs 1 Comment - 7 Views

I have a lot of hobbies. I like to say it's because I'm a versatile person, but in reality I think it's that I get distracted by another shiny object. Two years ago it was sewing, last year it was baking. This year it's gardening, particularly succulents, so when I discovered that there was big ol' succulent sale this morning, I force Randall to get up and go pick out some plants. I wanted to bring them all home, they're just so weird and cute!

Oh and if you're curious, former hobbies have also included photography (this one's sort of on going), knitting, printmaking, illustrating, bass playing (stand-up and electric), and a bunch of other things that I'm sure we'll talk about later.

Currently Listening: Slow Collision

I recently heard this song on Sirius. I've been known to like beeps and bleeps, la las, male vocals, pianos (used sparingly) and melodic female harmonies. Thus it's a no-brainer that this track by Swedish band The Deer Tracks totally caught my ear.

Apparently I Need to Add All of These Lost Cities to My Visit Before I Die List

Mon, 07/21/2008 - 11:37AM by sabs 1 Comment - 10 Views

As I mentioned, I really love traveling. I like to visit new cities, cross them off the list, and plan on going back once my list is complete (although I might have to make an exception for Reykjavik, Tokyo, Taipei, Rome, and Shanghai - those need another visit sooner than later).

The list, which always seems to be growing, just got a few new things added to it. I found this photo list of lost cities (what? entire lost cities, found!) over at Coudal, and am planning on adding these to my big travel. Except X'ian. That one's already crossed off.

I should also take this opportunity to mention that as a youngin' there was a brief moment in time where I thought I might be an architect, you know like Mr. Jones.
